This section handles the two directory listings and the row immediately above them. See the screenshot.
The controls are:
../) is excluded.<<):
<>):
>>):
../) unless the directory is the root dire
ctory.
There are several ways to move within the directory hierarchy. They are all explained here and then you can choose what you wish to use.
Mouse:
The simplest and most obvious way is just to double-click the left mousebutton or click the middle mousebutton on a directory in the listing.
NOTE! This (LMB and MMB) applies to directories only. With files it is different, see section 4.4
To get back up, click the parent item (../). Please remember that by default the hidden directories (and files) are not shown. If you wish to see and then access them, press the "Hidden" (H) -button. With mouse you can also use the "Root" (/) and "Parent" (..) -buttons. Remember that these require only a single click.
You can also get up in the directory hierarchy by double-clicking any path segment in the entry that shows the current directory. This way you can change directly to that directory.
Writing:
Move the pointer above the directory entry and write the desired path to it and press the <Return> key. If such a path does not exist, an error message is shown in the Info area and nothing will happen. The tailing slash will be appended, if it was not written.
A faster way to get to the entry is to simply press the <Escape> key anywhere in the window. The focus will move to the entry on the side where you pressed the key and also all of the path text will be selected. If you press <Escape> again, the focus will move to the other entry and so on. Now if you press either <Delete> or <Backspace> key, the selected text will be removed and you can start from the root.
If you press any other key, the selection will be cleared and you can continue from the current path. Now you can write the path and in doing that you can use the directory name completion. When you have started to write the path and press the <Tab> key, the path will complete to the point it can and then stop.
If there are multiple possibilities, they are shown in the listbox and you can select from them either with the mouse, the cursor keys or by supplementing additional characters and pressing <Tab> when needed. After you have written the new path, press <Return> key. Writing is disabled in the Virtual filesystem -mode.
If the focus moves off the directory entry, only possibly existing selection is cleared. You must press the <Return> key in the entry to change to the written directory.
Actionbutton:
You can define an Actionbutton to be a shortcut to a directory by editing it with the Button editor and selecting the operation to be [ChangeDir]. When you write the directory, you can use "~/" and "~USER/" in the beginning of the path. When you click the Actionbutton, the view in that side changes to the specified directory.
Copying and swapping:
You can also copy the view from one listing to another with the "Copyleft" (<<) and "Copyright" (>>) -buttons or you can swap the views with the "Swap" (<>) -button. All of the information (selections etc.) will be copied. Only swapping is allowed when using Virtual filesystem on either side.
Historymenu:
When you have moved in the directories, with one way or another, the directory historymenus will be updated. They show up to six last directories accessed, always in the way that the latest directory is on the top. When you select an item from the menu, the view will change to that directory. This feature is disabled in the Virtual filesystem -mode.
You can select files in both of the listings separately, they do not affect one another. Selection is done with the left mousebutton, either by clicking once on a file or pressing the button down and dragging the mouse. The selection mode is "toggle" i.e. when you click or press & drag the mouse on a selection, it will be unselected.
NOTE! If you select and unselect one file too rapidly, it will be interpreted as double-click and the results vary, see section 4.4
When you release the left mousebutton, the size of your selection will be calculated and shown in the Info area. If the size of your selection is greater than the free diskspace on the other side, the color of the selection turns red. This is only to remind that the [Copy] and [Move] -file operations will not succeed completely. If you unselect enough files or change the device on the other side to one with enough space, the color returns to normal.
When you perform some operation to the selected files (e.g. view picture files with xv) the selections will removed.
There are two buttons to assist in file selection: "All" (A) and "None" (N) -buttons. They either select or unselect all files and directories regardless of the previous selections.
Here are the rules on mouse behaviour:
In the listboxes and on the related items:
Left mousebutton:
In directory entry press & hold opens the history menu.
Actionbuttons:
If no selections are present, either the application is launched or, if internal procedure, nothing is done.
